One of the things that teachers love about Canvas is the ability to use a feature called “SpeedGrader” that lets them give feedback on written assignments in the browser. But, for SpeedGrader to reliably show your teachers what you’ve written, you need to turn in a “Word File” — that is, a version of your work that is generated by Microsoft Word (and whose name ends in either .doc or .docx).
Fear not! You do not actually need Microsoft Word to turn your work into a Word file! The short version is: your word processing app of choice can almost definitely export or save your file as a Word cocument.
