How do I make a PDF?

When you share your documents as PDFs, it preserves all of the formatting and presentation setup that you created on your computer, no matter what the setup is on the computer that’s reading your document. It’s harder to edit PDFs than a regular document, but they look exactly like a print-out of your document.

Mac OS

If you can print a document on your Mac, you can make it into a PDF. Follow these directions to Save a document as a PDF.

Gotcha Warning: Microsoft Word and other Microsoft Office products offer an option to export a document as a PDF. Do not export documents as PDFs from Microsoft Office! These PDFs are often corrupted and cannot be read by other devices. Always, always, always use the built-in “save as PDF” printing option instead.

Windows

The easiest way to create PDF documents on Windows is to install the CutePDF writer. This is a free download (note that there are other paid options that you do not need to simply print PDFs). Once you have downloaded the CutePDF Writer installer, double-click it to install and follow the directions that it provides.

Once installed, you will have an additional printer called “CutePDF Writer” that you can print to. This will create a PDF file.
